Shade, sap and falling branches all cost a roof years of service life. Most homeowners never connect the dots.

    Calgary’s older inner-city neighbourhoods, places like Mount Royal, Elbow Park, Bowness and parts of Killarney, have some genuinely beautiful mature tree canopy. Newer suburban builds mostly do not, since developers plant saplings that take decades to reach real size. If you own one of those older homes with a big spruce, poplar or elm hanging over the roofline, that tree is doing more to your shingles than you probably realize, and most of it is slow enough that you will not notice until the roof needs work years earlier than it should.

    None of this is a case for cutting down every tree near a house. Mature trees add real value to a property and a neighbourhood. It is a case for understanding what overhanging branches actually cost a roof, so you can manage the tree instead of ignoring it.

    Abrasion: Branches Rubbing the Granules Right Off Your Shingles

    Asphalt shingles are protected by a layer of mineral granules embedded in the asphalt coating. Those granules block UV light and give the shingle its wear resistance. A branch that hangs low enough to brush the roof in the wind acts like sandpaper, scraping granules loose a little at a time with every gust. You will not see bare patches after one windy week, but over a few years of repeated contact, that section of roof ages faster than the rest of it.

    This is worse on the windward side of a property and worse with softer wooded, fast-growing species like poplar and willow, which tend to have more whip in high wind, the kind Calgary gets plenty of from Chinook systems moving through.

    Debris in the Valleys and Eavestroughs

    Needles, leaves, seed pods and small twigs falling onto a roof collect in valleys, the internal corners where two roof planes meet, and in eavestroughs, where they block the water’s path off the roof. A valley packed with debris holds moisture against the shingles far longer than an open valley that drains freely, which accelerates wear and, in bad cases, encourages moss growth.

    Clogged eavestroughs create their own problem: water backs up, overflows the trough instead of running through the downspout, and can end up running down the fascia and behind the eavestrough itself. In a Calgary winter, water sitting in a clogged trough freezes, and that ice adds weight that can pull an eavestrough away from the fascia board entirely.

    Shade, Moss and Algae on the North Side

    A roof plane shaded by mature trees, especially a north facing slope that already gets less direct sun in Calgary’s climate, stays damp longer after rain or snowmelt than an open, sun exposed roof. That persistent dampness is exactly what moss and algae need to establish. Once moss gets a foothold, it holds even more moisture against the shingle surface and can work its way under shingle edges over time, lifting them slightly and giving wind a place to grab.

    You will usually see this pattern most clearly on homes backing onto mature trees on the north or northwest side of the lot, common in Calgary’s older established communities where the tree canopy has had decades to grow into a real presence over the roofline.

    Sap, Needles and the Animals That Use Branches as a Bridge

    Coniferous trees drop sap that can gum up a roof surface and attract dirt, and dropped needles pack into valleys and gutter systems in dense mats that are harder to clear than leaves. Beyond the plant material itself, overhanging branches give squirrels, raccoons and other animals a direct route onto your roof that they would not otherwise have. Once an animal has regular access to the roof, soffits and fascia boards become vulnerable, particularly any spot with a small existing gap that a determined squirrel can widen.

    • Trim branches back so there is no direct branch-to-roof bridge for animals
    • Aim for a reasonable clearance between the nearest branch tip and the roof surface, more for fast-growing species
    • Clear valleys and eavestroughs at least twice a year, more often under heavy tree cover
    • Watch for sap staining or dense needle mats concentrated under specific limbs

    None of these are difficult fixes on their own. The problem is that homeowners rarely connect a squirrel getting into the attic, or a persistently damp shaded roof section, back to the tree that is causing it.

    The First Signs You Will Actually Notice

    Most homeowners do not go looking for tree damage until something else prompts them to, so it helps to know what the early signs actually look like. A sudden increase in granules collecting in the eavestrough directly under a specific limb, rather than spread evenly across the roof, usually means branch contact is abrading that one section. Scratching or scurrying sounds in the attic, especially near dusk, often mean an animal has found a branch bridge and is using it regularly.

    A patch of green or black growth that only appears on one roof slope, and nowhere else on the same roof, is almost always a shade and moisture pattern tied to a specific tree rather than a roof-wide problem. None of these signs demand an emergency call, but each one is a reason to look up into the canopy above that section of roof and see what is actually hanging over it, rather than waiting for a bigger problem to force the issue.

    Keep a rough note of which section of the roof shows the pattern and roughly when you first noticed it, the same way you would for a hail claim. If a repair or an insurance question comes up later, a homeowner who can already point to when a pattern started has an easier conversation than one working from a vague sense that something changed at some point over the past year or two.

    The Real Risk: Limb Failure in a Wet Snow or a Strong Wind

    Beyond the slow wear, there is an acute risk. A wet, heavy spring snowfall, common in Calgary in April and even into May, adds enormous weight to branches that still have leaves or needles on them. Combined with a strong Chinook wind event, that is exactly the combination that brings down large limbs. A branch that size landing on a roof can punch straight through the decking or crack it outright.

    Insurers generally treat sudden tree-fall damage as a covered peril under standard home policies, distinct from the slow wear and tear caused by years of branch contact, which is typically treated as a maintenance issue and is not something a policy is designed to cover. That distinction is worth knowing before a storm, not after one.

    Pruning Without Ruining the Tree, and When to Call an Arborist Instead

    Not every overhanging branch needs a roofer’s opinion, and not every pruning job should be handled by a roofer either. For minor clearance trimming on smaller limbs, a homeowner or general tree service can usually manage it safely. For anything involving a large limb, work near power lines, or a tree that looks structurally compromised, that is an arborist’s job, not a roofing contractor’s. Roofers can tell you what the tree is doing to the roof. An arborist can tell you what is safe to cut and how to cut it without damaging the tree’s long-term health.

    A Healthy Tree and a Healthy Roof Are Not Mutually Exclusive

    The goal is not to choose between mature trees and a long-lasting roof. It is to give the roof enough clearance and enough drainage that the tree’s presence does not quietly cost you years of shingle life. A little maintenance, clearing debris, trimming for clearance, watching for damp shaded sections, goes a long way.

    If you have a mature tree hanging over your roofline and cannot remember the last time anyone actually looked at what it is doing up there, that is worth changing before the next big wind event does it for you.
